Chikuma is a japanese restaurant that started their business back in few years ago at Gembira Parade, Greenlane. It has moved to Sunway Tunas approximately 1.5 years ago. Sadly the menu has not changed much since then but they are having quite a few number of promotions to boost their sales. Customers who are buying their set meals are entitled to free flow of ice cream. One free ala-carte dish will be given whenever there are 4 set meals purchased. The drawbacks dining in this restaurant are there will be 10% service charge added and the lighting is rather horrible in the restaurant.
A small cup of Chawanmunshi (Japanese Steamed Egg) will be given for every set ordered. The Chawanmunshi was slightly over-cooked as you can see. The "holes" appearing on top of the steamed egg have affected the overall smoothness of the egg. The flavor was quite strong, probably as a result from the use of Dashi as the steamed egg appeared to have the sweetness. It would be much better if they did not over-cooked the egg.
Salmon Teriyaki Set (Rm16.80 per set). The thinly sliced salmon fillet was coated with sweet teriyaki sauce. A bowl of japanese rice, a small cup of Chawanmunshi (Japanese Steamed Egg) and a bowl of miso soup will be provided as well. The salmon was nothing special and was rather common.
Chicken Sukiyaki Set (Rm15 per set) It comes with a bowl of japanese rice as well. The pot was very hot the moment the sukiyaki set was served, and it contained a lot of fresh vegetables, glass noodles. The glass noodles were soaked in the soup. The sweet teriyaki flavor has blended well with the glass noodles. Good for those who prefer a sweet lunch.
Chicken Shogayaki Set (Rm13 per set). The chicken complemented well with the sweet sauce and can work perfectly with the japanese white rice. However, the chicken does not possess a very ginger flavor, "Shoga" generally means ginger and "Yaki" refers to grill.
Sashimi Set (Rm22 per set). The sashimi boat includes 2 slices of tuna, 2 slices of white tuna, 3 slices of salmon and 2 octopus. The salmon and white tuna were rather fresh and were perfectly sliced. The tuna however, was rather disappointing due to the texture or improper way of slicing. The octopus were decent. Overall, I find the set slightly over-priced.
These Gyoza (japanese dumplings) were given for free due to the promotion (buy 4 set meals free 1 ala-carte item). If you had at least tried Gyoza before, then you would have known that Gyoza should not be deep fried instead. The taste was totally out and it was not something I was expecting from Gyoza. Moreover, no ginger/vinegar was provided to go with the Gyoza. I was very disappointed with the dish.
Free flow of ice cream can be enjoyed if you have purchased at least a set meal from Chikuma. Fortunately, they are not using some cheap brands. The ice cream were considered smooth and creamy. A total of 5 flavors were provided-- Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Yam and Chocolate Mint.
