If you are a big fan of steamboat then you probably want to pay attention to this blog post, I have been actively searching for more steamboat outlets in Penang and coincidentally I bumped into one recently, Tang Steamboat is a Taiwanese-based restaurant which serves Taiwanese steamboat (includes Taiwanese Spicy Steamboat). Moreover, they offer steamboat buffet at a fairly reasonable price -- Rm26 (exclusive the 10% service charge). You are entitled to order any dishes/steamboat ingredients that are being listed on the menu list but they do penalize whenever a customer tends to waste the food. One of their signature dishes is their Stinky Toufu (台湾臭豆腐) which is quite uncommon in Penang. Other than the usual steamboat ingredients, they do offer some Taiwanese specialties for their customers, not to mention their barbecue skewers where customers can grill their own skewers outside the restaurant, of course, an electronic barbecue pit will be set up.
Part of their steamboat buffet menu, local delicacies such as lobak are also being offered.
There were two types of sauces offered, usual chili sauce and their specially home made sauce which consists of garlic, chopped chilies, soya sauce etc. I personally prefer their home-made sauce as I am a huge fan of garlic.
Taiwanese Spicy Soup and Clear Soup version were chosen. The spicy soup was just okay, I would prefer those with enormous amount of corn peppers as they tend to release a very unique aroma. The spiciness was just okay as well, its definitely safe for those who could not take spicy food.
These were their Stinky Toufu. Although the smell was so horrible but I still took a bite and the conclusion I have made was I would never ever try any of these again. The exotic flavor just does not suit my taste buds at all.
These were their small dumplings with mushroom soup where the fillings of the dumplings were the creamy mushroom soup. The crispy outer layer complements well with the cheesy and thick mushroom soup, the whole dumpling possesses a very strong buttery aroma. Strongly recommended.
Gyoza (Japanese Dumplings,锅贴) were rather oily and the texture was just okay to my liking. It would be ideal if they could have just strained the oil after they have fried the dumplings.Their fried popiah was very crispy the time they were served and it works well with the chili sauce provided.
Home-made fish paste(鱼胶) and minced pork(免治猪肉), the texture of the fish paste was disappointing. This could be a result of putting too many flour inside the fish causing the texture to be too soft.
The noodles shown were fish paste noodles that were made from the fish paste above. The icy toufu (冻豆腐) was very good when cooked in the spicy soup as they tend to absorb the soup very well.
An overview of the steamboat (with flash). Duck's blood can be a very good option that goes well with the spicy soup. I was told that its a must-try when one is having spicy steamboat soup.
As mentioned earlier, they do provide their customers some skewers that are to be grilled on their own. A few types of meat will be offered which covers chicken, pork and beef. The taste was decent to me and they were a bit dry based on my liking.
Ice cream cake is also included in the buffet package, the ice cream cake was very nice indeed. Some chocolate flavored cake crumbs were topped on the chocolate ice cream to create the unique texture. Since both the ice cream and the cake crumbs were chocolate flavor, they complement well with each and other. and the dessert was not too sweet and was just nice in my opinion. Recommended.
