Rojak (Malaysia and Singaporean traditional fruits and vegetables salad) is very common and easy to find in Penang. However, finding a unique Rojak will be quite tricky. I came across this stall few months ago and decided to check it out today. Its not hard to locate this stall, it is situated at Air Itam (Lintang Angsana), right in front of ToTo and Magnum 4D. What makes this stall of Rojak special is definitely their way of presenting the food-- using the concept of Lok-Lok (food skewered on sticks), where they skewered all the freshly cut fruits by using a bamboo stick. Other than the usual ingredients found in Rojak, the owner has added some special ingredients too, namely fried fish balls, fried bean curds, fried sausages etc; or rather, the stall sells both Lok-Lok and Rojak. There was a similar stall in Bukit Mertajam too. Price-wise, cheap and economical, each skewer is priced at Rm0.60. I would definitely re-visit this stall again if I am craving for Rojak.
You will be given a small metal bowl to deposit the soul of Rojak, the sauce. There will be 2 types of Rojak sauce available, which will be the spicy version and non-spicy version. The spicy version was very hot to me, so it is recommended that one should mix both types of sauce to balance and diversify the spiciness. You can request for more chopped peanuts too. Take away is possible too, the owner will be giving you a small plastic can of Rojak sauce depending on the amount you are buying.
Its quite amusing to find out how these Lok-Lok worked with the Rojak sauce, imagine how the unique and distinctive aroma from the Rojak sauce brings out the flavor of the fish balls. Everything is ready to be eaten here, so you have to be prepared that the fish balls will not be too warm.
As for the freshly cut fruits, the choices are way more than the usual Rojak, the special ones are definitely Jack Fruit, Cherry Tomatoes, Papaya and Water Apple. The freshness of the fruits was successfully preserved thanks to the massive usage of ice cubes to maintain the temperature. Truly refreshing to have a skewer or two under the scorching hot sun.
Afraid of getting thirsty after all these ? Worry not, the owner has something to quench your thirst as well, you can get a cup of chilly grass jelly (Leong Fun) at just Rm0.60 too ! So, basically everything in this stall is selling at Rm0.60.....
One major drawback of savoring this unique Rojak is you have to stand by the road side. Although the weather was killing me, but its definitely worth it !
