There is this small but cozy restaurant in Tanjung Bungah, which is stone-throw distance from the morning wet market and Tuesday night market located. It is facing to the Rapid Bus Terminal at Tanjung Bungah either. Golden Crust offers some of the most exquisite Gourmet Pies, Tarts and even Quiches. They do have another branch/kiosk/booth opened in Gurney Plaza either, I had my visit on Tuesday, which was the weekly Night Market/ Pasar Malam being held, it was rather packed and customers just came in on and off, whether to take away or to have a quick bite. As for me, I've had a wonderful meet-up session with my friends, the place is suitable for chit-chatting or usual meet ups too. Price-wise, I find it affordable and worth the value, drinks are pretty economical too. Ample parking spaces available during usual time, but beware of the Tuesday night market as finding parking can be pretty tricky during that time. The seating is rather limited in this cafe as it only accommodate up to six or seven person, you may call for reservation first to avoid disappointment.
We were told by the staff that their signature dishes are Pepper Beef Steak Pie and Chicken & Mushroom Pie. We've opted for the Chicken & Mushroom Pie (Rm 8) instead. Portion was pretty big, good enough as snack for tea time and supper. As you can see, the pie was fully stuffed with fillings which consisted of Chicken, Mushrooms, Onions, Potatoes and some chopped Carrots. The pastry had a very heavy buttery flavor which some might find it over-powering. Moreover, I would also prefer that the fillings come with some cheese or cream just to give the extra moisture as I find them a bit too dry to my liking. Anyway, it was a decent pie with a slight improvement needed.
As for desserts, we had their Almond Pear Tart for Rm 6.50 which I find it worth the money as the portion was kinda big. Other desserts available during that night were Fruit Tarts, Chocolate Tarts etc. The Almond Pear Tart was beautifully caramelized and topped with three slices of thinly cut pear. The tart has the perfect sweetness for me as I do not fancy those over-sweetened desserts. Flavor-wise, could be much better if they could have infused more of the pear flavor into the tart. Additionally, the pastry was too dry to my liking, would prefer to have something softer. Nevertheless, it was still above par and I would call it a very decent one. Recommending this over the Chicken & Mushroom Pie.

Yea, too bad they were a bit dry to my liking :P
DeleteI love rich crusted pies. Though I am a lil surprised that if its buttery, shouldn't it be rich and moist too?
ReplyDeletetho the buttery flavor was heavy but it was dry, i think you can even find it dry by looking at the photos LOL!
DeleteLooks yummy! I want! : )
ReplyDeletehaha, come penang! :P
DeleteOooooo...the pies look really good. Wouldn't mind having those. You did not eat the meat pies in Oz - those would be even nicer, I'm sure - the real thing! I ate a lot of such stuff there or in NZ. Their beef is so fresh and juicy.
ReplyDeleteyea, i did try some of them and yes i do agree that the beef in OZ are the best, their chickens and eggs are super duper fresh as well :D
