Hui Lau Shan (许留山) Hong Kong Desserts @ Gurney Plaza, Penang.

Ever since I've came back from Perth, I've noticed about the recent mushrooming of Hong Kong dessert eateries in Penang, Tong Pak Fu and now, Hui Lau Shan. Many should be familiar with the name Hui Lau Shan, and basically you can find them everywhere in Hong Kong. They are known to sell some of the best mango desserts in town. Since I was outdated for quite some time, I've decided to pay them a visit to check out their menu. The Hui Lau Shan at Gurney Plaza is located at third floor, right beside Meet Fresh and Daiso. I wasn't too fancy about all these Hong Kong desserts, especially Hui Lau Shan as my previous visit to their outlet at Hong Kong (Mong Kok area) earlier ago this year wasn't that good, I find the desserts were rather "boring" as most of them were fresh fruits and further complemented by mango juice. Prices are steep considering the extra charges (6% Government Tax and 10% Service Charge)... out of curiosity, I've checked out two items on their menu list.......

So apparently Hui Lau Shan is famous of its mangolicious desserts, as such, I've decided to try their Mango Romance (芒之恋, Rm 12.90) which comes with three small choices of their mango desserts- Mango Mochi, Glutinous Rice Balls with Mango Juice, Mango Ice Cream with Jelly. All of the desserts being garnished and complemented by some freshly cut Mangoes. The portion for every single dessert under this order was small but they were sufficient for me. I adore the Mango Ice Cream the most since it offers me the strongest mango flavor and it was not too sweet, just good enough to my liking. However, the Glutinous Rice Balls were horrible, they were not fresh at all or something goes wrong with the flour, I can't really tell what was the problem but it just doesn't fit. Total failure. As for the Mochi, it was very normal and you pretty much can imagine the taste, a small cube of freshly cut mango being wrapped with Mochi, nothing much to shout over. This set is suitable for those who wish to savor more choices instead of scratching their heads off, wondering what to order.

Supreme Coconut Stewed Bird's Nest with Harsmar Jelly (燕窝椰皇炖雪蛤, Rm 22.90) was something special and unique to try with. You can either opt for the cold version or the hot version. The portion was just okay, as in it was good just for one person. The flavor of the Coconut milk was very strong, with a mix of Harsmar Jelly (雪蛤膏) and Bird's Nest (燕窝). I personally find this dessert okay in terms of its taste, not much of surprise.
