The first chain Japanese conveyor-belt Sushi restaurant has landed in Penang, with the long anticipated opening at Gurney Paragon Mall, Penangites finally get to taste some really affordable yet quality Japanese dishes. Sushi Zanmai has 7 outlets in Kuala Lumpur and the first Sushi Zanmai outlet has just opened its doors few days ago. Sushi Zanmai is strategically located at level 6 of Gurney Paragon Mall, right beside to Rakuzen Japanese restaurant. Fortunately, their service was very attentive and everything seemed to be well-organized although it was the very first opening day for business. The speed of replenishing the items on the conveyor-belt was fast too. Overall, I thought the quality of the food was slightly above average (prices are competitive and affordable though) and slightly over-rated, nevertheless, Sushi Zanmai is way better than Sushi King and Sakae Sushi in my opinion. I will definitely go back for a second visit but strictly for novelty, just to check out some other dishes that I have yet to try....
We were intrigued by the price of this Sashimi Moriawase Rokko (Rm 30, 6 types and 2 pieces for each type) which consists of Salmon, Tuna, Tuna Toro, Sweet Shrimp and Squid (both raw and cooked). This could be the cheapest Sashimi Moriawase I've seen so far, the Sashimi were fresh and thickly sliced to my liking. This is definitely one of the noteworthy choices for Sashimi lovers out there.
As for the main, I had Spicy Niku/ Beef Ramen (Rm 13.80) which comes in 3 thin and well-executed Beef strips, Cabbage, Capsicum, Bean Sprouts,a halved Ajitsuke Tamago/ Runny Egg. The perfectly cooked Beef were abundantly flavorsome and tender to my liking. However, I was not too happy with the quality of the Ramen, the noodles were not as springy as expected but the broth was averagely okay. The broth was spicy on its own if you must know. Nothing beats the Ramen at Goku Raku Ramen, even the Ramen at Sushi Tei fared better than this.
Una-tama Don (Rm 18.80 for small) was averagely okay either. I must admit that the rice was perfectly cooked and the sauce was delicate and well-complementing the Unagi, with an extra touch of runny Egg but I didn't like the way they prepared this dish, I was expecting a denser flavor from the Unagi but it the other ingredients were over-powering. Maybe I should look for some other Unagi Don next time....
The way they priced their Sushi was impressive either, everything seems so affordable on the conveyor belt, the cheapest being Rm 1.80 and the most expensive Sushi is priced at Rm 6.80.
