Steamboat will never go out of fashion in Penang and Penangites are always ready for steamboat. However, finding a decent steamboat with reasonable prices is getting tougher and tougher these days. Here's the place where many raved about- Eam Huat Charcoal Steamboat. The place can be quite obscure for those who are not familiar with this area, simply locate Batu Lanchang wet market and you will find Eam Huat Charcoal Steamboat right beside Central Park Condominium (opposite of Batu Lanchang wet market). Lack of air-conditioning, the place can be warm and frustrating for the heat-intolerant. Nevertheless, the quality of the steamboat (ingredients/ soup) is above par, not to mention that the prices are really wallet-friendly and reasonable too. Definitely a place where steamboat fans shall not miss!
Regardless of the package you've chosen, their steamboat "hot pot" comes with some ingredients- Deep Fried Bean Curd Skin, Dried Seaweed, Yam, Black Fungus and some Cabbages. One sip and my eyes widen, the clear broth itself was ridiculously sweet and flavorful but NO, it does not contain any Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), we didn't feel the thirst after having the steamboat. I love the way they soaked and cooked the Yam, they were aesthetically pleasing and delectable. Their home-made Sambal and chopped Bird Eye's Chili are some lovely accompaniment to the ingredients.
We had the Rm100 package which comes with Fish (both Raw and Deep Fried version), Prawns, Cuttle Fish, Fish Balls, Meat Balls, Fish Dumplings, Crab sticks, Fish Maw, Quail Eggs, Bean Curd Sheet, Enoki Mushrooms and some Vermicelli Noodles (Bee Hoon). If I may, the seafood were extremely fresh and succulent, I was especially enamored for their Deep Fried Fish, slightly a bit bouncy but not too tough to chew, the texture was just perfect to my liking. You may find other packages priced at Rm 60, Rm 80, Rm 150 and Rm 200 respectively.
We also had an extra order of Fish Paste Noodles at Rm 5 per plate. I just love the bouncy texture of the noodles, with a hint of seafood sweetness within. A great choice for "add-on".
