Mantis Prawn Hokkien Mee/ Ah Lim "Birthday Noodles"/ Mr. Kek Swiss Roll @ Pinang Delicious Food Court @ Macalister Road, Penang.

Many asked: "Where's your favorite Hokkien Mee/ Prawn Noodles in Penang?", being on my top 3 list, Seang Lim Mantis Prawn Hokkien Mee is definitely one of the must-have if you an ardent fan of Hokkien Prawn Noodles. Unlike any other Hokkien Prawn Noodles where ordinary shrimps will be added, Seang Lim uses Mantis Prawns, bringing the both the flavor and texture to a whole new level. Tucked within a not-too-eye-catching coffee house along Macalister Road Penang, one can also find the infamous Ah Lim Birthday Noodles/ Lam Mee as well as a humble and unpretentious swiss roll "specialist" in the place. It should be fairly easy to locate Pinang Delicious Food Court, you should be able to see it from Red Rock Hotel or the junction to Abu Siti Lane and walking distance to Krian Road.

As a result of hours of boiling to extract the essence of the crustacean, the Mantis Prawn Hokkien Mee (Rm 6 for Small) comes in a broth with orange hue; each spoonful of this saturated broth was a burst of seafood sweetness. Every bit of it was a joy to savor. Additionally, copious amount of Mantis Prawns was added to the noodles, the crumbly yet with a slight resilient Mantis Prawns definitely amps up the flavor of dish by adding a more layered dimension. However, the place will be throng with patrons during weekends, do head to the place earlier to avoid disappointment.

Many might have heard of Ah Lim Birthday Noodles/ Lam Mee (生日面) at Macalister Road and it was my first attempt. Lam Mee is also known as "Birthday Noodles" which symbolizes longevity and the dish is often served during birthdays in Peranakan households. To my surprise, the broth at Ah Lim's was actually thicker than I thought. The Lam Mee (Rm 3.50 for Small) was just a mediocre, the broth was not as flavorful as I thought it would be. No doubt the addition of some minced pork of theirs did further enhance the flavor but the broth itself was rather flat and less flavorsome. Their Sambal Chili was the soul to the dish, no it was not lip-numbing hot but at least it manages to give some flavors to the dish. The only thing that impresses me was their fresh and succulent prawns.

While you are in the vicinity, do drop by this place to check out their freshly made Swiss Rolls (Rm 3/ pack). There are many flavors available, Charcoal Bamboo, Sesame, Green Tea Red Beans, Sweet Corn, Coffee, Strawberry just to name a few. I had their Green Tea Red Beans, the sweet Swiss Rolls were fluffy and beautifully layered with Cream and Red Beans. I like mine to be well-chilled for a firmer bite but that is totally subject to personal preference though. As told by one of my followers on my Facebook Page, their Cheese Cake is as equally delicious as their Swiss Rolls, not too sure how true but you might as well check it out.
