Many burger joints have been sprouting out in Penang recently, being a not-so-burger-fan, I have no interests in visiting or trying any burger joints at all. However, there was an exception recently, I was browsing through Facebook and came across an interesting dish- Ramen Burger (they do serve ordinary burgers). Pine Tree Cafe is situated at Jalan Sungai Dua, few doors away from KFC Sungai Dua. I wasn't impressed with their menu as most of the dishes listed were quite common. As USM students are one of their main customer sources, prices are really affordable and wallet-friendly. The place was thronged with crowd during our visit and to my dismal, we had to wait for more than 40 minutes before our foods were served to us. Probably they are still new, there are rooms for improvements in terms of service and serving speed.
Ordinary burgers are just too mainstream, therefore, I had their Chicken Ramen Burger (Rm 10.90). A thick slab of Chicken Thigh was sandwiched in between 2 thick pieces of grilled Ramen, doused with Japanese Shoyu Sauce. Fortunately, some fresh greens were served instead of those boring French Fries, the salad was tossed with Balsamic dressing beforehand. The Ramen was not seasoned at all, it does not possess any significant flavor at all, but the edges were torched to a crisp. As for the Chicken, it was tender and juicy, not over-cooked to my liking. However, the Chicken could use more time for marination in order for it to fully absorb the flavors. Moreover, the Shoyu Sauce was inadequately balanced as well, it was slightly too dry and lacked of flavors to my liking. It could be better if they could spread the Ramen with their sauce in my opinion. Overall, it was decent but not mind-blowing. Nevertheless, it was a good experience in trying out such creative dish.
Do not harbor high expectations on this Clam & Scallop Linguine (Rm 11.90) and you have probably noticed.... Where's the Scallop & Clams? I was told that they were running out of Seafood that night and agreed to replace with Salmon but to my surprise, they served me Squid. A huge disappointment after I had a bite onto the Squid, they were "fishy" and not fresh at all; I didn't bother to eat any of the Squid on the plate anymore. Squid-aside, the Linguine was okay, slightly over-cooked but still acceptable, but the overall dish was under-seasoned and lacked of flavors. I thought this dish was below-par in my opinion.
