Having a heart-warming steamboat dinner during a rainy season is a wonderful life moment and Sawara Steamboat is one of the undisputed places in town to enjoy a decent Fish Steamboat with your loved ones. The place is easily overlooked by one due to its inconspicuous location at the corner lot along the shop houses at Burmah Road (same row as Grain Loaf, Maybank). Prices are slightly on the higher side but rest-assured, the quality of the food will be there. However, the staff were not quite friendly during our visit probably due to the heavy customer flow and the place was throng with patrons during our visit. Nevertheless, this is definitely one the places should not be missed by steamboat-lovers. Do make an early reservation to avoid disappointment.
The broth was flavorful with a burst of seafood sweetness but not salty to taste and mildly seasoned. It might be slightly under-seasoned for some but as you cook the ingredients, the broth turns sweeter. Avoid this place should you are someone who prefers your dishes with bold flavors.
The must-try items in Sawara will be their Home-made Fish Paste as well as Fish Dumplings, unlike any other Fish Pastes, their version comes with a unique twist of having Parsley inside while the texture was less-bouncier as compared to the mass-produced ones.
We had a Steamboat Set for 3-5 people for Rm 98; it comes with:
- Prawns
- Sliced Fish
- Sliced Abalone
- Sawara Fish Scoop
- Cuttlefish
- Jellyfish
- Chicken Meat
- Stuffed Bean-curd Sheet
- Tau Pok with Fish Paste
- Bean-curd Sticks
- Cod Fish Dumplings
- Button Mushrooms
- Tofu
- Enoki Mushrooms
- Abalone Mushrooms
- Cabbage
The set might be good for 3-4 people but I would not recommend the set for 5 people unless the 5 of you are small eaters. You may, however, go for the additional "add-ons" should you find the need to do so.
Glass Noodles/ Tang Hoon (Rm 1.50)
Ignite your taste buds with their home-made sweet Chili dip, which is a lovely accompaniment to the steamboat, it has a Garlicky flavor, with a gentle touch of Parsley/ Coriander as well as toasted Sesame Seeds. Simple but delicious.
