A great news for tea lovers and afternoon tea devotees, a well-renowned international brand TWG by The Wellness Group has finally set foot in Gurney Paragon Mall Penang. Many were excited with the opening of TWG and the place was throng with crowd during the Chinese New Year holiday. Relentless queue can still be spotted now during weekends, as so, you might want to avoid peak hours should you plan to visit during a weekend. While you are waiting, do pick your orders from the standing menu right in front of the place as you might take some time to consider what to order from the myriad choices of tea available.
The branch here is obviously smaller in size as compared to others, hence, it might not be too accommodating for larger groups. However, the elegant and sophisticated English grandeur setting makes it a charming spot to spend some quality time with your loved ones, as well as to enjoy their range of luscious desserts and to have a cup of fine-quality tea. TWG Tea Salon & Boutique Gurney Paragon's branch is located on ground floor, right beside Godiva Chocolate and opposite to the mall's concierge.
TWG Tea Croque Imperial
We had:
1) Fortune Set (Rm 45.50) *Good for 2 or 3 person I reckon*
- TWG Tea (from the extensive list)
- TWG Tea Croque Imperial- Warm Toasted Sandwich with Gruyere Cheese and Smoked Salmon, served with delicate green salad and house vinaigrette.
- Choice of 2 freshly baked Scones or Muffins served with TWG Tea Jelly and Whipped Cream
- A choice of 3 Macarons.
2) 1837 Set (Rm 26.50)
- TWG Tea (from the extensive list)
- Choice of 2 freshly baked Scones or Muffins served with TWG Tea Jelly and Whipped Cream.
Served warm, the TWG Tea Croque Imperial was the only savory item served for the set. The well-executed Sandwich was generously filled with Smoked Salmon with a perfectly burnt Gruyere Cheese topped. It can be slightly salty on its own but it works perfectly fine with the top-notch quality tea.
Scones and Muffins served with TWG Tea Jelly and Whipped Cream
The Scones were not as fluffy as expected, they were slightly hard to the bite. Fortunately, the Whipped Cream and Tea Jelly were there to complement with the scones. I like their Whipped Cream to be as light and easy as Clotted Cream. The big sized Muffin, on the other hand, can be quite filling. It was crumbly but it was not dry, with copious amount of melted Chocolate Chips inside, it could make any Chocolate lovers weak in the knees. A perfect choice and solid attempt for Chocolate lovers to appease all Chocolate cravings.
Napoleon Tea & Caramel (Pink), 1837 Black Tea & Blackcurrant (Black), Matcha (Green)
The Macarons are priced at Rm 5 each for ala-carte orders. We were especially enamored for the Black Tea Macaron, it was sweet but not cloyingly over sweeten, with a hint of tea aroma and light/ smooth to the palate. Matcha was quite a standard-average Macaron, with the distinctive refreshing flavor from the Japanese Green Tea. We did not quite seem to appreciate Napoleon though, it was quite a playful and quirky combination, with a discernible aroma of spices in which it might not be easily accepted by some.
Red Tea- Red Africa Tea (Rm 19 if ala-carte)
Green Tea- Sakura Tea (Rm 19 if ala-carte)
Pink Beauty- Mocktail of Fresh Watermelon Juice and Green Beauty Tea (Rm 19)
