The Hillside Cafe Bar & Restaurant @ Hillside, Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

The Hillside Cafe is yet one of the newest cafes that joins an already clamoring crowd in Penang. Manned by expats, the cafe offers a wide range of breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes ranging from the conventional western breakfast to some pasta dishes, sandwiches and burgers; of course, salads for the health-conscious as well. The cafe itself is an inviting and artsy space with personal touch, this can be seen from the paints adorning the walls. Decor is minimalist, in shades of rustic wooden beam with cozy and comfortable couches and chairs. While prices could be slightly on the higher side for some dishes but we did not leave feeling shortchanged due to the substantial portion. However, there were some hits and misses both in terms of food and serving speed (probably due to first day jitters); but as the place is still pretty new, it is worth a second look and I reckon that this place has the perfect setting to wind down and enjoy your hearty breakfast.

The Works (Rm 19.50) featured their home-made Pork Sausage, Bacon, Eggs, Heinz Beans, a couple of grilled Cherry Tomatoes and a buttered Toast. The Eggs were certainly well-executed with the yolks remain "runny". The Pork Sausage, on the other hand, did not manage to convince me with its texture; it was bouncy on the outside but rather mushy inside, albeit the meat was reasonably flavored and packed with aroma of herbs and spices. Everything seems nice but nothing overly exciting.

Their Traditional British Fish and Chips (Rm 22), on the other hand, was a little less successful. I did enjoy the batter but I thought it could be thinner, in which the ratio of Fish (they use Tilapia anyway) to batter was somewhat incorrectly measured. Also, both the Fish and Fries could be crispier, they were no longer crispy towards the end of the meal. Fortunately, the texture of the Fish was firm; you may assuage the guilt by having the side- fresh greens while the Lemon introduces a little sharpness to the dish (though some vinegar would be equally great too). This dish has its potential but the Chef needs to make some fine-tune to the recipe.
