Have a taste of India at Spice Market Cafe, Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa Penang as the restaurant invites award-winning Chef- Chef Seth Shantanu (from Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort, Kota Kinabalu) as their guest chef to present a series of his signature dishes in their 6-in-1 buffet promotion; together with the dedicated local culinary team here in Penang which shares a common passion- to serve the best dishes to diners.
Wait, there's more! Spice Market Cafe continues to surprise its diners with its unbeatable prices for their buffet spread. While the P60 promotion continues for every Monday and Tuesday (for more information, please hop over to here), the restaurant rolls out a new promotion- P70 for every Wednesday and P80 for every Thursday. It works the same way, in which diners get to enjoy a 30% discount for the restaurant's International Buffet on every Wednesday and 20% discount on every Thursday.
Chef Seth's meticulously prepared signature dishes will be featured under the Indian section of the buffet and some of his signature dishes are Butter Chicken, Sarson Macchi and Murgh Malai Tikka. Diners can enjoy his dishes from 25th of May 2014 until 26th of June 2014.
Chef Seth's signature dishes impressed us with its evocative flavors and impressionable quality. The dish Laal Maans stands out from the other dishes, it was robust with flavors and delicately salted. The Lamb was deftly seasoned and beautifully-cooked till perfection, little effort was necessary to detach the meat; perfect to go with the Naan. A taste on the Lamb and we were like "Oh... So Good!". It was a pity that Chef had to tone down the level of spiciness, otherwise, the curry would be perfect. While we enjoyed the curry sauce from the Malabar Prawn Curry but we thought the texture of the Prawns could be better. Tamatar Ka Kut, on the other hand, might not be a scene-stealer, it did not disappoint us with the refreshing yet appetizing sourish tinge which cleanses the palate after a few spoons of curries.
Cheese-lovers will be glad to see the spread here at Spice Market Cafe, appease your cravings for Cheese here as the restaurant offers 6 types of Cheeses, ranging from Soft Cheese to Hard Cheese. Brie Cheese, soft and creamy interior covered with a white rind was my favorite of the evening while the Blue Cheese with an acquired taste might be good for adventurous eaters. Assuage the guilt by having some vegetables, it was also a surprise to see Artichokes, Aubergines, Capsicum and Zucchini here; the vegetables were lightly roasted and grilled with an extra hint of smokiness. The Smoked Fish, Chicken Terrine and Lamb Ham may seem nice but nothing is overly exciting.
Both the dishes Cajun Scented Fish Fillet and Fish Masak Merah were ethereal . The fishes were so fresh, the experts should be able to tell from the pristine white flesh. The curry from the Fish Masak Merah had not done much in its aid but the firm and meaty flesh was so juicy and toothsome. Pair it with the Citrus Cream sauce and the dish will be flawless. Like-wise, the Roast Duck with Sze Chuan Pepper Sauce was pleasingly delectable either; though the texture could be more tender but I did enjoy the frisky engaging Sze Chuan Pepper Sauce. Meanwhile, hop over to the Japanese section for some Japanese Sweet Baby Octopus (Chuka Lidako), Japanese Seaweed, Japanese Prawn Roe (Ebiko) or even Korean Kimchi.
Save yourself some room for their plethora desserts. We were amazed with the presence of Creme Brulee; the dessert was first tipped with Sugar and the Chef will torch and caramelize the dessert, giving it a pleasant burnt aroma. The Chocolate Creme Brulee encased in a sugary roof was absolutely lovely. It was very chocolaty and the sweetness was balanced out by the bitterness of the Chocolate; the Coconut Longan Creme Brulee, on the other hand, was too creamy and the Coconut flavor was rather overpowering to our liking. Other desserts include Sour Cherry Pie, French Pear Tart, French Crepe, Ice Kacang and assorted Cakes.
