Tofu Cafe @ Beach Street, Georgetown, Penang.

*Tofu Cafe has since ceased its operation.*

With myriad of options available in Penang now, finding a decent place for a weekend brunch is never an easy task. "Where for brunch?", should this question pops up in your mind, consider Tofu Cafe. The primary business of Tofu is their Hostel while the Cafe serves as a complement to the hostel guests should they feel like having brunch. However, the Cafe is open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. The snug little quaint cafe has limited seating, thus, it is not quite accommodating for larger groups. Menu-wise, Tofu Cafe does not have much to offer currently, but we were satisfied and happy with the quality and taste. While our brunch was a resounding success, we thought the service could be friendlier.

Sweet Bacon Love (Rm 12.50) received unanimous votes as the best dish of the day from us. Beautifully toasted Benggali Toast with Scrambled Egg, Bacon and a touch of Corn Syrup for the mild sweetness. The Scrambled Egg was perfectly cooked while the inner part remains "runny". It surprises us further with its enticing combo of textures and flavors, the Bacon provides a chewy and meaty bite to the Egg while the smokiness of the Bacon was infused into the Egg; as though both ingredients have amalgamated together while the Corn Syrup introduces a gentle sweetness to the dish. Thumbs up for this.

Big eaters could go for their Yogurt Chicken Volcano (Rm 16.50)- Benggali Toast with sauteed Chicken, Onions, Bacon and Capsicum Mix and served with Yogurt with a touch of Herbs and Paprika. The vegetables were perfectly cooked while maintaining a juicy bite; Chicken Breast was used, this can be perfect for weight-watchers. However, I thought the Chicken was slightly under-seasoned, the Yogurt cuts through the flavor by a little though it gives a nice sourish tinge to the dish. The Benggali Toast, on the other hand, was equally lovely either. It was not heavily buttered but lightly toasted for the extra crunch, just the way I like. A perfect brunch for the health-conscious. Not recommended for those who prefers Chicken Thigh over Chicken Breast though.

Nutmeg Frappe (Rm 10)
