Penangites' all time favorite and proud- Assam Laksa, everyone has their own favorite places when it comes to Assam Laksa but the nearby residents of Sungai Ara would probably recommend this stall under the tree. Manned by a team of two (mother and daughter), the humble Assam Laksa stall has been there for quite sometime and since then, become the nearby residents' favorite. Despite the place may not have the perfect setting for the heat-intolerant but it offers unabashed authentic Assam Laksa and various types of snacks at very affordable prices. While the taste was not outstanding, we thought that this place may be ideal for you to grab an afternoon snack and to satiate your cravings for a bowl of Penang Assam Laksa.
A truly authentic Penang Assam Laksa (Rm 3.30- small). Sour, savory, spicy and sweet, this bowl of Assam Laksa had all the boxes ticked for a decent Assam Laksa. We like the addition of Shrimp Paste which gives the Assam Laksa the sweet note and surprisingly, the broth tasted somewhat similar to the famous Assam Laksa stall nearby the Air Itam Wet Market. However, it paled when it comes to the Fish, in which it does not possess the meaty texture as compared to Air Itam's. Also, we thought that the texture of the noodles was a little slouchy. Nevertheless, this moreish and delicate dish is worth a try especially if you are in the vicinity.
Deep fried food lovers will be delighted to know Deep Fried Spring Rolls (Rm 0.70 each), Chicken Wings (Rm 2 each) and Banana Fritters (Rm 0.50 each) are available. While they were inevitably oily and greasy, they made a good complement to the Assam Laksa broth. And yes, dipping the Spring Rolls into the broth is another interesting way to enjoy them- the Penangites' way. The Banana Fritter, on the other hand, was addictively good with a faint aroma of Banana.
