Griffiths Cafe @ Kampung Baru, Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

Griffiths Cafe might not be new for those who are staying at Bukit Mertajam, the cafe is famous of its home-made pastries and cakes. Quiches, Tiramisu, Walnut Cake, Pumpkin Pie are amongst the note-worthy choices to look for. Other than pastries and cakes, the cafe serves Western dishes too but nothing seems to be overly exciting though. We were very tempted to try their Quiche and Pumpkin Pie but it was a pity that they were not available. Prices are considered reasonable and the staffs were friendly but I am not sure if the place is worth for a second visit though; probably more for novelty (yes the Quiche and Pumpkin Pie) rather than absolute taste. Griffiths Cafe is located at Kampung Baru, a stone's throw distance away from Vivo Cafe and Station One.

We were excited when the staff told us that their Tiramisu (Rm 10.90) is generally slathered with Baileys but to our dismay, the sponge layer of the cake turned out to be rather dry and the flavor was too thin to be discerned. Fortunately, the Mascarpone- Cream layer was good, it was cheesy and has a gentle touch of Coffee flavor. Not being a fan of Coffee, I found the cake acceptable but it might not be too recommended for those who demand a stronger Coffee flavor. It has potential, if only the sponge cake could be moister.....

Similarly, there were some hits and misses for this huge slice of Walnut and Chocolate Chip Cake (Rm 7.90). We love the copious amount of sweet Chocolate Chips and crunchy Walnuts in the cake but the texture was a tad dry to our liking. Furthermore, the cake was a little hard to slice through. Sweetness-wise, it was perfectly balanced despite of the generously added Chocolate Chips. The cake has some potential but it requires some refinements to make it better.
