Delight Delicatessen has shadow of Nando's, the renowned flame-grilled Chicken specialist in Malaysia; evidently seen from its signature dish- Mera Mera Chicken and their home-made hot sauce. Both share some similarities, yet different in its own way. Opened for a year, the place has proven to be one of the favorite lunch spots for the nearby office workers. Reasons? Inexpensive, large portion, quality food and air-conditioned dining hall (though finding a place to park may be a problem). Setting of the place is simple and straight-forward (not meant for special occasions with your loved ones or largr groups). Delight Delicatessen is located at Macalister Lane, few shops away from the famous Seow Fong Lye Cafe and ATIC College Penang.
Adventurous eaters or those with higher heat-tolerance can challenge their signature Flame Broiled Mera Mera Chicken (Rm 13.80 with 2 sides). Diners are to choose two sides out of four- choice of Fries, Coleslaw, Mera Mera Rice and Edamame. Apart from that, diners may choose the level of spiciness (hereby refers to Mera Level)- Mild Mera, Pungent Mera, Super Pungent Mera and X Mera. We opted for Super Pungent Mera. The Chicken Thigh was nicely grilled, with a slightly puckered-crispy skin. The Chicken was as hot as expected, but still within acceptable range. It was reasonably marinated but I thought the meat could be juicier. You may, of course, dip with their home-made Mera Mera Hot Sauce which added a tongue-numbingly hot sensation to the bite. Two possible outcomes, you will either shout Shiok! or Help!
The Coleslaw was okay, nothing out of the ordinary but I thought the combo of having Edamame was rather odd. I was expecting peeled Edamame but it turned out they were served unpeeled. I found it troublesome for me to peel and especially tiresome with the sauce around. Conclusion? Not too shabby if you wish to seek for a change or to challenge their piquant and peppery Mera Mera Hot sauce.
Another signature dish of theirs- Spaghetti Meatballs Bolognese (Rm 12.80) comes with a rather generous portion, 6 meatballs and bountiful sprinkles of Cheese Powder. The Spaghetti, unfortunately, was slightly overcooked (but not slouchy) and no longer al-dente. The Bolognese sauce was meticulously seasoned with aplenty of minced Chicken meat but I thought it lacked of a crunch. It would be better if they could add in some Onions, Celery or Capsicum for the extra crunch and juicy bite. The Chicken Meatballs, on the other hand, were toothsome and abundantly seasoned with Herbs and Spices. The Meatball was pleasingly firm to the bite but can be rather salty on its own. Good value for the portion nevertheless.
