The Big Beans touts itself as a casual-leisure coffee place, it does not have a big menu offering a wide selection of food but rather; a simple, small home-cooked style menu consists of few pasta dishes, a couple of Sandwiches and some desserts. Undoubtedly, the place does exude such a relaxing vibe, the interior decor is generally simple painted with turquoise color and an eye-catchy angel-wing mural taking up the whole of one wall, resembling "dream big, fly high". Eclectic couches and comfortable pillows were carefully selected and the spacious seating ensures privacy; the whole place emits a minimalist sort of elegance. While the ambiance is good, I thought they need to work more on their menu. It is still a good place for a cup of Joe nevertheless. The Big Beans is located at Madras Lane, opposite to Copra Mill Leisure World.
I would have decided to against it had I known about the Bolognese-alike sauce. As expected, I was not quite impressed with their Spicy Tuna Spaghetti (Rm 14.90) which came in a petite portion. The sauce was lackluster, it lacked of a crunchy element; perhaps some Onions or Capsicum will bring out more flavors. It was sweet, sour with hint of mild spiciness kicks in gradually. Traces of Tuna were seen but I would prefer mine to be in chunks, for a meatier bite. Some sprinkles of Cheese Powder would be great too. They need to re-craft their recipe for this dish.
Coffee Creme Brulee (Rm 10.90)
Vanilla Creme Brulee (Rm 10.90)
They did not have much to offer on our visit (for sweet treats) and we decided to go for their Vanilla Creme Bruleel; creamy, milky custard beautifully covered under a torched sugary roof. The sweetness was quite balanced with a robust Vanilla flavor but I thought the burnt aroma needs to be stronger to bring out the full flavors of the caramelized top. Coffee Creme Brulee was on the house; unlike Vanilla, Coffee Creme Brulee possessed a strong Coffee flavor while maintaining the silky smooth texture. Burnt aroma was present for this time but I thought the ratio of caramelized top to the custard filling was somewhat inappropriately measured. A little fine-tuning to the recipe is needed.
