A walk along Chow Thye Road leads me to this quiet, curious and rustic cafe. The cafe proffers a slightly different menu- local Malaysian dishes with Nyonya-influence; evidently seen from their specialties like Curry Kapitan, Kiam Chai Ark, Tu Tor Th'ng, Loh Bak etc. The menu, however, does not seem to match with their cottage style interior design. Not only does Old Chow Thye bake their own cakes but they do brew Coffee as well. We had no space for mains so we could only sample a couple of their home-made cakes. Ratings were given solely based on their cakes only. Old Chow Thye is right next to Monkey Cup Cafe along Chow Thye Road.
I was introduced to their signature home-made Chequer Cheese Cake (Rm 12.90) by one helpful server. It was basically Cheese Cake with some Sponge Cake between the layers. I like my Cheese Cake soft, moist and cheesy but Old Chow Thye's version did not seem to possess the quality. The Cheese, on the other hand, was not cheesy enough (too much gelatin perhaps). Not that bad but not something that I am fond of.
Butterscoth Cake (Rm 3.90/ slice) paled in comparison with the previous cake. Albeit it was moist but the flavors were somewhat soft, as though I was having a normal sponge cake, quite a sweet one. Nothing to shout about, something that I would not order again.
Herbal Tea (Rm 2.50)
