The one-hour short lunch time is one of the biggest restrictions for most office workers to have a decent meal, especially in a classier restaurant. It is almost a mission impossible as the serving speed needs to be extremely fast for the restaurant but Western Spices did it perfectly. I've managed to get my lunch done within a short period of time, though the parking was inevitably inconvenient in the vicinity. The long established fine-dining restaurant- Western Spices has introduced a well-subsidized Set Lunch, particularly targeting the executives working in the nearby offices. The 4-course Set Lunch is available from Rm 19.90++ to Rm 35.90++.
Baked Fish with Basil and Cheese (Rm 23.90) was good, the Fish Fillet was nicely baked and deftly seasoned, cheesy but not overly so. The extra touch of Basil added another layer of dimension to the Fish. Pasta was decent, it shared some similarities to the Pasta of the Day but a milder Sesame with an earthy Mushroom flavor, not too shabby.
Sesame Paste was added to their Chicken Pasta of the day (Rm 21.90), the Sesame flavor overpowered the entire dish, the use of Herbs was to no avail. The combo did not really work for me, I thought it was rather odd to mix Sesame Paste with Spaghetti, or rather, an acquired taste. I'd settle for the safer choice- Aglio Olio or something simple, this dish was a little too playful for me.
Potato Soup was served to us in a jiffy, the well-timed service adds some marks to the nearby office workers, especially for such a short lunch hour. The Potato Soup was nicely presented with a squiggles of Cream and a few crunchy Croutons, but it did not hit me with a very strong impression, I thought the flavor was a little subdued or the fact that Potatoes have slightly mild flavor on its own. For a moment, I thought I was having a slightly thicker Chicken Soup.
Chef wrapped up the meal by serving us Pandan Cheese Cake, an ingenious idea of infusing the vegetal Pandan flavor into Cheese Cake and garnished with desiccated Coconut. Unfortunately, the taste did not turn out as expected. The Pandan flavor overpowered the Cheesiness of the cake, as though we were having an usual slice of chilled Pandan Cake. Good idea but it needs some fine-tune to get the flavors right.
