Thai Boat Noodle craze continues in Penang, evidently seen from the opening of a new Thai Boat Noodle-specialist at Jalan Zainal Abidin, Georgetown. The new establishment has a quirky, catchy name- Thai Me Up; the small menu features a series of their Noodle-dishes but no, they do not serve their noodles in small portion but rather, normal-average portion. It should not be too hard to locate the place, Thai Me Up is just next to Sentral College on the same road. However, given that the food was not mind-blowingly good, I would not make my way all out just to have their noodles. Nevertheless, they are still new and the menu is constantly evolving, I might need to make a second visit before making a conclusion.
It was simply too futile to refrain myself from ordering Thai Boat Noodle (Rm 8.90), a bowl of satisfying, herbaceous sweet meat broth containing a generous amount of Pork and herbs. Diners get to choose between Soya Noodles, Pumpkin Noodles, Spinach Noodles or Oat Noodles. We had Oat Noodles for this one, the noodles were disappointingly average. They were a little too heavy to go with the light and seemingly invigorating broth; flavors did not manage to dovetail with each other. We would still prefer the classic selection of Thai Glass Noodles or Vermicelli Noodles. Another thing worth mentioning was their home-made tangy Chili Sauce; an acidic concoction of Vinegar and tongue-burning Chilies.
We were introduced to their signature dish- Khao Soi (Rm 7.90), a Burmese-influenced dish which comes in thick, rich and creamy Curry akin to Green Curry, minus the green hue. It possessed an indelible sweetness but the aroma stood out. The extra splash of Chili Paste added another layer of dimension to the dish by introducing a slight sharp, piquant but gentle Chili heat. The Chef played a nice twist by adding in Pickled Radish, making the dish would not be so overly rich and surfeit for one to finish it entirely on his/her own.
