Artichoke Cafe @ Raja Uda, Butterworth, Penang.

Another new addition to the exciting cafe scene at Butterworth- Artichoke Cafe, is not an ordinary cafe next door. It does have something solid and sturdy to offer. The place has an interesting array of Brunch items to offer (but be mindful that it serves brunch items until 2:30 pm only) as well as some carefully curated mains and desserts. We wondered why was the cafe named Artichoke since the menu has got nothing to do with the spiky green and we were informed that the initial plan was to incorporate Artichokes into their menu but the difficulty in sourcing the vegetable is one of the hindrances. The interior decor is simple and unpretentious, with its wallet-friendly price tags; this is one of the few places that you can visit for your regular meals at Butterworth. To find Artichoke Cafe, locate Coffee Venture and Marlons +Co.; Artichoke Cafe is within walking distance from the aforementioned cafes.

An unusual attempt- Pork Burger (Rm 17.90) comes in a substantial portion which includes a small bucket of Fries and Coleslaw. A thick, juicy and firm Pork Patty was being sandwiched in between two beautifully charred Buns and topped with a sliver of Cheese and some Pickled Cucumbers. The patty exhibited limited pork-notes, credits go to the skillfully-used Herbs. It was on the salty side on its own but it goes perfectly well with the Bun. A rather safe though calorific option.

We were introduced to Spaghetti Arrabbiata (Rm 14.90) by the server, which left us with a strong impression. The al-dentely cooked Spaghetti was evenly tossed with the spicy Tomato-based sauce and jeweled with slivers of Cheeses. The Chef played a nice twist by adding in the generous amount of Cheeses, which counter-balanced the tartness of the Tomato sauce and added another layer of dimension to the dish. It would be perfect if they could throw in some meat, probably Grilled Chicken would be great. No, I am not complaining for that price tag.

For those with a sweet tooth, go for their Apple and Banana Crumble (Rm 8.90). The dessert was served to us piping hot with a quenelle of well-chilled Vanilla Ice Cream. Nothing to shout for the Ice Cream but it did provide an interesting hot and cold combination to complement the dessert. The Crumble, on the other hand, was impressive. It has heaps of Banana and Apple filling, sheathed under a thin layer of nutty crumble. If I had to nitpick, it would be the sweetness; way past my sugar tolerance level. A good option to be shared by a few though.
