Macalister Mansion, a luxury colonial mansion in the bustling heart of Georgetown; has turned into an iconic boutique hotel in Penang since it first swung the doors opened 3 years back. The English Mansion has a comfortable space dedicated to serve a range of delicate sweet, savory and the downright tasty; one can opt to go for their Afternoon Tea Set or simply pick their preferred choices at the display fridge. Furnished with sophisticated Western artworks and elements, that sets an elegant tone to the patrons. It may be the perfect spot for Afternoon Tea if the place is not fully occupied, it may be a little cramped otherwise. The timeless Afternoon Tea Set comprises of beautifully crafted Quiches and Bagels served on a wooden tray, accompanied with mouth-watering sweet treats and a fine-selection of TWG Tea.

Macalister Mansion's new Afternoon Tea Set does not come with a three-tier tray, unlike the traditional ones; the items will be clearly displayed on the wooden tray. We started with the savory items and we simply enjoyed their Quiches; though they did not seem promising at first but we were impressed with the intense flavors. The tangy Cherry Tomatoes introduced a layer of delightful acidic tilt to the creamy-cheesy filling. The crust was nicely done either- buttery and flaky. Some refinement needed for the Smoked Salmon Bagels spread with Cream Cheese, we thought the flavor of the Cream Cheese was rather mild and the Smoked Salmon was too thin and thus, did not manage to provide a satisfying bite. Their home-made Scones were praise-worthy, the magical combination of the Clotted Cream and their not-cloyingly sweet Strawberry Jam complemented the English bread cake well. Other sweet treats were decent but none of them disappoint. Price may be a little steep but we were happy with the quality and the ambiance that comes together with the price. A min 2 pax order is a must... Rm 39 nett per person (a min of Rm 78).
