There's a literal smorgasbord of cafes and restaurants in every corner of Penang but none operates the way like Awakenings does. The team behind the meatless cafe has an ambitious mission... to educate and create awareness of healthy living/ lifestyle; in which many are intoxicated by the unhealthy lifestyle (whether forcefully or willingly). They wish to share the message that living healthily is achievable with little effort, everyone should start from small and that includes... a healthy meal. The cafe serves as a platform for communal offering. It does not operate for profit, anyone who shares the same vision may join in; raw ingredients can be provided to individuals to churn out snacks/ food to be sold in the cafe. One needs not contribute in monetary form, rather... the effort to cook/ bake the delicacies. Taking the idea from White Ocean Strategy, there are plenty of things on sale in Awakenings- products from different countries that could contribute a good cause. Speak to the proprietor and she will be more than willing to share her story with you. Awakenings does not offer a big menu but simple, healthy snacks to munch on (mains are served during lunch hours only).
Rolling Butterfly (Rm 7.90)
Sweet Potatie (Rm 5.90)
Awakenings sure knows how to play with colors; all dishes are carefully crafted with vibrant colors. The Rolling Butterfly is one of the items on offer- Vietnamese Spring Rolls with Vermicelli Noodles, crunchy Greens and a touch of Butterfly Pea... served with refreshing light dip (no Fish Sauce- meatless place). Texture was brilliant but the seasonings were weak; perhaps without Fish Sauce, the Vietnamese delicacy would not shine.
Sweet Potatie was something unusual, Steamed Sweet Potato served with Sour Cream and Caramel, garnished with dried Cranberries, Raisins and desiccated Coconut. The concoction was simple yet complex with flavors and texture... quite an acquired taste. No complaints for that price though.
Eggless Pumpkin Tarts (Rm 3 for 3)
GSC- Tortilla Chips with Guacamole and Salsa (Rm 4.90)
We were not convinced by their Eggless Pumpkin Tarts at first but these little crumbly tarts were beyond amazing. It was mildly sweetened with a mellow Pumpkin after taste. The buttery-aroma was bold but everything just blended well together. GSC was fun and addictive to munch on but we thought the Guacamole could use a light touch of seasoning; also, we thought the portion could be slightly larger. We washed everything down with a glass of Cold Pressed Fruit Juice.
Be Creative! Cold Pressed Fruit Juice (Rm 13- up to 4 types of Fruits and Vegetables)
