Ancient Road Seafood Restaurant (古代一路泥土鸡) @ Bagan Jermal, Butterworth, Penang.

Beggar's Chicken (叫花鸡) has been one of the signature China Chinese dishes and its history can be traced back to the Ming-Qing Dynasty in China; today, the dish is popular in Jiangsu Province (of China). Inspired by this great dish, this Chinese restaurant tucked in a terrace house along the bustling Jalan Bagan Jermal has recently gained the attention of netizens for serving this old Chinese delicacy. But Ancient Road Seafood Restaurant is not a one trick pony, it has a great selection of Chinese Zhu Char dishes as well; in fact, we thought some of the Zhu Char dishes outshined the signature Chicken dish. Prices are most affordable except for the Chicken but if you appreciate the interactive process (diners ordering the Chicken may proceed to "unwrap and release" the Chicken from the Soil by hammering it), you will probably find it worth it.

Hainanese Spring Rolls (Rm 5)

Kerabu Salad (Rm 12)

All Chicken dishes are wrapped and baked with Soil, there are 5 flavors to choose from- with Smoked Chicken being the most expensive. We had their signature Herbal Chicken, which was served with thick and rich Chicken broth that packed a flavorful punch. Ancient Road uses Free Range Chicken so the broth did not come in as greasy as expected and the meat was firmer than usual. It was decent but did not come across as a mind-blowing dish, as though it was just an ordinary dish.

The Kerabu Salad was served with a twist- Green Apple was used, with a concoction of Cabbage, Tomatoes, Chilies, Onions and sprinkles of Dried Fish. It carried an indelible sweetness... perhaps too sweet to our liking. But the combination of Green Apple and greens was good though, probably we like it with a tinge of acidity. To our surprise, the Hainanese Spring Roll stole thunder. While we did not find the outer pastry crisp enough, the well-seasoned Jicama filling with a burst of crunch was extraordinary. The fragrance from the five-spice powder was bold and traces of Crab Meat can be seen. The bite was multi-dimensional and robustly flavored. Best of all... it was only selling at Rm 5 per roll.
