May Fong (美芳) Ipoh Chicken Rice and Hor Fun @ Kampung Benggali, Butterworth, Penang.

It's no secret that Butterworth is home to a few good restaurants that serve delicious Poached Chicken and one of the oldest names in this "expertise" is May Fong Restaurant at Kampung Benggali, Butterworth. It's impossible to miss the place during lunch hours, the place is often thronged with regular patrons especially during weekends. Families bringing the old and young is a common sight here, it is possibly the de-facto dining place for those living in the neighborhood. The menu is small here, in fact, only Poached Chicken and Wan Ton.... with Rice or Ipoh-styled Hor Fun (with add-ons like blanched Sprouts or Vegetables) but more than enough to entice the crowd. The best time to visit would be around 11 am or expect to wait for at least half an hour before your orders are served.

Poached Chicken (Rm 10/ small)

Ipoh-styled Chicken Hor Fun (Rm 3.80/ small)

Wan Ton Soup (Rm 6 for 10)

Praises were sung for the poached Chicken- the gelatinous skin was silky smooth with tender, succulent meat, served over a splash of glistening thick sauce. The seasoning was spot on and the Chicken flavor was beyond amazing. It was good on its own but even better with May Fong's home-made Chili dip; hands-down one of the best poached Chicken around. While we had the option to go for Rice, we decided to go for their famous Ipoh-styled Hor Fun. Arguably finer and smoother than local Koay Teow, the Ipoh Hor Fun was lightly dressed in Soy sauce and Sesame Oil, served with Chicken slices. It was a good main to enjoy with the poached Chicken. Equally praise-worthy was the home made Wan Ton Soup. Every dumpling was served in bite-size but they did not skimp on the ingredients. Each small dumpling consisted of a piece of Shrimp and equal portion of meat; together with the flavorful broth, it was a pleasant add-on to the main spread.
